In a distance that practically equates to the entire length of South Africa's Great Trek, 44-year-old Pierre Carter, will this month attempt to fly, hike and conquer over 1 000 km of treacherous terrain in just under two weeks. Not only will the mountaineering maestro cross the distance alone, with over 10kg strapped to his back, but he will be doing so across one of the world's greatest mountain ranges, The Alps. Being the only South African to have qualified to compete in the 2011 Red Bull X-Alps adventure, Carter hopes to fly the SA flag high as he races non-stop from Salzburg in Austria to coast of Monaco with just a paraglider and his boots to help him. Constantly raising the bar to new extremes, Carter has been a professional paraglider for over 20 years, and began mountain climbing while still a teenager. In his long career he has represented SA in the 1991 and 1993 World Paragliding Champs and climbed to mountains tips higher than 6000 metres in South America and Russia. In a world first attempt Carter has also set out, with a small team, to not only climb but fly off the peaks of the highest mountains on each continent in his ambitious 7 Summits 7 Flights adventure.
